There’s GLUTEN in makeup?
I wore NO makeup for 6 months.
People usually notice my eyes, but no one could see my eyes because I wasn’t wearing any makeup. If fact, all positive comments on my appearance stopped for 6 months. (This is the SOUTH y’all. Makeup and sweet comments are what do!) I felt invisible.
No comments on my long eyelashes. No one asking me what MASCARA I use. No LIPSTICK marks on my kids cheeks. No one curious about the lip gloss color I was wearing. Na-da. Zilch. Zero.
I was off kilter, and it was all because of gluten.
When I discovered my gluten allergy, I also learned gluten was in ALL of my personal care products. Not only did I have to throw away ALL my makeup. I threw away shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, even my razor because the soothing strip at the top had gluten in it. Replacing all those products didn’t just cost a lot of MONEY It also took a lot of TIME to research new products that were safe.
Like most people, I want to put my best self out there. I want to be noticed. I agree that my physical appearance isn’t the most important part of my life, but I am a woman and almost every thing in my life experience are all wrapped up together. Everything is connected.
When I was diagnosed with my gluten allergy, it wasn’t just affecting my gut. My poor gut health was affecting my skin. The blisters on my face were affecting my appearance and energy. My appearance and lack of energy was impacting my self-confidence. My self-confidence affected my mood and my mood impacted my relationships. Even my relationship with Hal was tested in those days. Unbeknownst to me God was using my husband’s detail oriented nature to take care of me.
Just before Christmas that year, I was in a puddle of tears because we learned that we would be taking some family pictures….as in with the extended family. Our money was tight and I was feeling particularly distraught over what I would look like in those family pictures with no eyes (aka no mascara.). I was crying to Hal, and asking him….Why is there gluten in makeup? How was I going to get safe gluten-free makeup before Christmas?
Instead of coming over and scooping me up in a hug, Hal excused himself from the room and said, “I”ll be right back.” He returns with something hidden behind his back. He tenderly kneels down to me and pulls out a little box and says, “Merry Christmas.” I opened up the box to find the gluten free mascara I had been researching and desperately wanting! How sweetly he loved me. I was known and seen!
That was years ago now, but I think about it all the time. I’ve OVERCOME so much in my health journey.
